APC Products used to be good. Just bought the second of these units for use in two different places. After a week the NMC on the first unit became inaccessible but UPS still works for what I need. This unit, the NMC is inaccessible out of the box. Bad firmware? Maybe. Can’t tell because I can’t Access it. This NMC won’t even reset to factor default. The main UPS part of the unit works fine. It just can’t be managed.

Suspect units used/referb
Purchased 2 APC Smart-UPS X 1500 units as NEW units on same order. Arrived, the model numbers were slightly different. External indications both units were used/referbs. Like other reviewer, NMC in both units were used/refurb and they STILL had data from previous customer (kroger, internal DNS and NTP servers, etc.). NMC firmware old (2017). Also, like other reviewer, the default password on one NMC was not the default. Factory reset necessary. Also, new units from APC come with mounting rails, neither of these did. If was listed as refurbishment, and the price cheaper accordingly, things would have been fine, but as was, and even a poor refurbishment job, this was unacceptable.

Greatly extends runtime.
Not sure why anybody would give this less than 5 stars. It is a box with batteries in it built with the same high quality of any other commercial grade UPS hardware from APC, except it doesn’t have any real electronics in it. It plugs into specific APC UPS models and extends its runtime. In this particular case my APC SMX1500RM2U has one pack containing four 12V 9AH SLA batteries and this battery box has two more of those packs, which it links up in parallel. More of these battery boxes can be daisy chained in and the UPS should automatically detect this. I only have one of these battery boxes, so can only comment on it greatly extending the runtime by well over 3x as the load is distributed over more batteries and so the internal losses from each battery is less at a particular load level for the overall UPS. Also adds a bit of resilience as if one battery chain fails, there are two more in parallel. Have been using for over 5 years now and the battery swap was easy including popping the packs open with a flat head screwdriver and swapping the individual 12V 9AH SLA batteries, granted you could just buy new packs for more money, but why? (Actually if you are a commercial operator, you probably will just spend the extra for new packs until it comes time to cycle out the whole UPS.)This battery box would be an option to consider if you need more run time on batteries and your cooling situation is such that you are not concerned about overheating while running on these additional batteries. I suppose if you have the money, you could add in an environmental monitoring NMC in order to shut down when the environment becomes too harsh. After all saving yourself from a power outage doesn’t matter much if your hardware fries because it got too hot in the room or something. The primary role of a UPS is a graceful shutdown to avoid corruption where a battery box like this is to cover more of edge cases. In my particular edge case the room won’t heat too quickly and the hardware is designed to handle high ambient temperatures at full load as well as having its own environmental monitoring.
