Works well, but poorly designed “Test” button and sound could be louder
I hope I never have to test this smoke and CO2 detector beyond a test situation or those times when it gets set off by something simple, such as inadvertently burning butter on the stove. It’s gone off two or three times since it was installed a couple of months ago compared to the incredibly annoying number of times my old one used to go off at the slightest whiff of smoke or heat coming from our gas stove, which is located approximately seven or eight feet from the detector. We have an incredibly tiny kitchen, so we’re limited as to where we can place it. I was expecting for this new one to drive me crazy like the old one did (which was fire alarm only), so it makes me wonder if the old one was just too sensitive or if this one is perhaps not sensitive enough, especially considering it’s not far from our stove. For now, though, it does seem to be alerting us when needed, and it has dual functionality, so I’m good with that. I pray I never hear it alert for CO2 detection, but it gives us peace of mind knowing it’s displaying “0”, especially since we have a gas stove. The test function works well, and hopefully, it’s accurate, but the “Test” button is poorly designed just like the one on our old one, which eventually broke and fell into the unit because we had to silence it so many times. This one doesn’t alert nearly as much, so maybe it will last a little longer. The rest of the unit seems to be durable enough, but to be honest, it all depends on that button because you also need it to silence it from an alert. Installation only took a few minutes with the included hardware. And the sound is pretty loud, but it doesn’t seem to be as “piercing” as our old one, which I believe is imperative considering the sound has to reach to the back bedrooms and be as “nerve shattering” as possible to wake a household in the event of a fire or CO2 emergency. Don’t get me wrong, this alarm is very loud and will probably do a decent job of waking people up, but it’s my opinion that a “piercing” alarm that hurts your ears is going to be more effective. All in all, not a bad detector, but I believe the “Test” button needs to be improved as well as the sound.
